About the

HPRI

The Institute is dedicated to advancing comprehensive research and analysis on the complex geopolitical dynamics of the Himalayan region and its neighborhood. Situated at the crossroads of several key Asian powers—including China, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, and the Himalayas—this region represents not only a formidable natural barrier but also a critical geopolitical pivot with profound strategic, environmental, and cultural implications. This Institute aims to explore the multifaceted interactions between state actors, border disputes, security challenges, and the region’s unique ecological and cultural landscapes.

Through research, dialogue, and collaboration with academic institutions, policymakers, and local stakeholders, the Institute for Study of Himalayan Geopolitics aspires to become a leading hub for knowledge production and policy guidance on the geopolitics of the Himalayas, addressing both traditional and non-traditional security concerns and emerging challenges posed by both internal and external factors.

Understanding Himalayan Geopolitics

Recognizing that the Himalayas are more than just a zone of interstate rivalry, the Institute emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches that integrate political geography, international and economic relations, environmental studies, and cultural anthropology.
This holistic perspective is essential to understanding how geopolitical tensions intersect with other asymmetric threats facing the region, including drugs and human smuggling, small weapons, natural and man- made disasters, climate change and biodiversity.
